Unit A

Unit A is a research-led BSc Architecture Design Studio at the University of East London, led by Carsten Jungfer and Fernanda Palmieri. We work with live-project situations and connect design learning with research through knowledge exchange between students and external partner organisations. Unit A focuses on social-spatial conditions within contested urban contexts and understands architectural design both as a spatial and strategic response to specific socio-spatial contexts.

crit feedback

just to say we have e-mailed you the feedback sheets.
check your e-mail.

11/12/2013

For students presenting on friday:

In addition to all your work produced this term, remember to show your Palermo site sketches and site photos of personal observations informing ideas of programme.
Also critical: show your sketch model from workshop and the schematic section of that idea drawn and inserted into an existing peoject site section.

Also: everybody is expected to attend and participate the entire day. We will take a register in the morning (and if you are not on that list you will not present).

08/12/2013

Crits Tue 10 & Fri 13 Dec

This is who will present on what day. (Not running order)
We will start at 10.00 sharp. Everybody to attend all day.

All presentations are individual - make sure you show everything you have done so far on portfolio sheets. A3 reductions are OK - however make sure that key drawings are printed full size e.g. A1 - so that they can be comfortably seen.

Prepare your verbal presentation (10min max), script keywords, so you know how to connect all the bits ad pieces of work. Important: Make sure you sleep the night before!

Project site drawings (group work): As said, all those site drawings will be hung onto walls too - so you need to coordinate with your site group that you have everything ready to be hung. If you are the only one presenting from your group its your responsibility to print the drawings.

For your presentation (verbal and visual) you will receive an indicative mark / feedback, that will show you where you are standing at this point in time with your work. For this we will use the same feed-back sheets that are used at the end of the year for assessments. So this is a great opportunity - make sure you do not miss it.

Tue 22 Oct Tutorials + Indesign session 16:00

Tuesday will continue as workshop / tutorial / casting session all day 10.00 - 18.00. So there is no need for allocated tutorial slots. We can do a sign-up on the day. Please remember to bring in your big axonometric drawing(s) of the urban moment, as well as initial portfolio sheets documenting the mould-making and casting experiments. The axonometrics should become finalised now, containing multiple layers of information. Also your 200 word conceptual texts would be good to see now. You can also e-mail those to Felix and me.

Indesign session at 16:00 (this is optional and will be a basic introduction to the set-up and use of indesign for use of portfolio-editing. (no need to attend this if you know all about it already - L3?)

Reflection on model-making. Reading reference No.3

We handed out this text last Friday. It is critical that you engage with the text and use it to reflect on your process - as part of your conceptual. We want you to take a personal position. It should also help you to expand the way you think about the material moment you made.

Now: How can your model be re-interpreted and conceptualised? What was the core message / main interest you wanted to explore / /experiment / communicate initially? How successful was it? Was there something else emerging as part of the making / thinking in negative space / constructing the mould? Could the 'model' be read in different scales? By model we mean the cast but also the mould. If so,  what qualities can you describe to those artefacts and what can be extracted from those? Spatial qualities? occupational aspects?, lighting, materiality, etc....

All these considerations should inform your next steps in terms of further casts you will be making,  using parts of your mould and parts of previous casts. Make sure that you document all those considerations and conceptual reflections visually in your portfolio (various techniques)

Thin casting technique

Following your first casting experiments as "solids", we had a chat with fabricator Roey Hunt yesterday in terms of what techniques could be useful for your next steps by using your plaster casts (or parts) as mould for the next round of casting. This morning we recorded for you a thin layer casting technique.  Have a look how this works.

16/10/2013

Fri 18 Oct - Tutorials + Lecture 14.00

For Friday please continue to construct your mould and try do at least one plaster cast (that casting workshop may be closed is no excuse - work outside with two buckets as said. Refer also to my e-mail from yesterday.)

When you have done this draw your mould to scale (plan, section, elevation, etc) Remember also to document this process of mould-making and cast (also the things that went wrong).
Also carry on with you axonometric drawing (during times the workshops are closed...)

We will do tutorials on Friday similar to yesterday, between workshop and studio. We expect you to make stuff in the studio all day. (no pin-up this Friday)

Lecture again at 14.00. Topic: 'editorial'.
Lecture now added to dropbox. download here.

Tue 15 Oct - Casting workshop

As mentioned last week, we will be based in the UEL wood-workshop and plaster-workshop on Tuesday - all day. We have invited back Roey Hunt, a fabricator and specialist in mould making. You will construct your mould on that day and make at least one cast in plaster. Please bring all you materials for mould-making (plywood for box/base) and your bespoke materials you want to cast against for making the "negative space". Link to the brief for this, again. We have organised the plaster.

Please pin-up to our grey studio wall before 10.00:
- photograph of your material zoomed-in area marked up.
- your 1:1 drawings of that material moment (plan section(s)

We will start at 10.00 sharp. Everybody to attend from the morning. We have booked the workshop for the morning, pm is open to the entire school. Maximum of 15 students in workshop. We will put up a list in morning. First come  - first served. We hope to work around numbers - not all work needs to be done in the workshop....

Fri 11 Oct - Tutorials and Lecture at 14.00

Lecture at 14.00 on Drawing Change (please all attend) - location tbc

What we want to see Friday:
Near finished / completed Axo of your city-moment. Sectional quality overlaid and the spatial qualities fully represented. Various layers of 'exploded" information extruded, etc. Synthesising all your research into a single drawing. Indication of temporary / 'momental' qualities. (yes - you will have to put lots of hours into this now....)

Scaled survey (section/plans/ etc) of your selected "micro"- moment + photographs / taped-up / marked-up area.
Bring in your materials for mould-making in reference to Saturday's workshop visit and briefing. You will also need to get / scavenge / some plywood (min 12 mm think) for your basic mould. pick up bits from the wast container in parking lot / left-over from workshop.

Text to read in preparation for next tutorials: (in case you did not pick up the  hard copy of interview with Rachel Whiteread): download from our dropbox. folder 03_reading

Remember to always bring the last two weeks of drawings with you (at least)

Reminder: Supplementary unit fee
Please pay this and give us the payment form / receipt / authorisation for deduction of bursary. (please note that as a Unit we are only able to use our material budget once everybody has paid in full. As we need to buy materials very soon, please action this urgently.)

Palermo field-trip dates

Please make arrangements to book your flights to Palermo, Italy:

The dates are:
Departure Sat 09 November
Coming back Sat 16 November

Us tutors (CJ / FXS) are taking the easyjet flight going out from London Gatwick Sat 09 November at 11:45 arriving 15:35 in Palermo.

Alternatively you can go with ryanair (slightly worse, but same type of budget airline) We suggest you avoid travelling with hold baggage, save costs, but also travel lightly. It's not good to take too many things....

Coming back on Sat 16 Nov (Palermo - London) you can pick either easyjet or ryanair. up to you.

Make sure you have passports and visa(if needed) in place. this is your responsibility.

--------------

RE accommodation. Just to be clear:
We will all stay in the same place. It's a former monastery / now hostel / B&B: Collegio di Maria - Palermo. We will do tutorials / working together so no time to waste getting lost, etc... and €20 a head / per night is pretty good value.
http://www.conventisicilia.it/conventisiciliapalermoen.html#.UlA_BbxDAzB

We need exact numbers to confirm the reservation.
If you have not signed up on the field-trip list circulated on Friday, send us a e-mail ASAP confirming your participation. By signing up you will be expected to pay for your accommodation (even should you later not be able to come).

Us tutors are coordinating the accommondation for all participants with the hostel. This is something you don't have to do. We hope all this is clear? - if not e-mail us.

Sat 5 Oct: Workshop Visit

We will visit a specialist workshop on Saturday to learn about mould-making and processes of casting. All that you will need for your next model-making project that runs up to week 9.
Roey Hunt and Steve will introduce you to various techniques on the day.
Just to say this is a total "one off" opportunity - not to be missed.

Digimap for Smithfield Study Area

Thanks for sourcing the digimap for our study area. It can be downloaded from our dropbox folder 04_site info / Smithfield Market.

I raised this with some of you yesterday. It would be great to have a digital OS map of the Smithfield Study area. Can Level 3 students please coordinate this inbetween you and download one by Friday - and upload to dropbox to share? You learned how to do this last year....
I think a  stripped-down / simple version would be sufficient. (keeping file size down).
thanks.

Site visit Day 1

Welcome to Unit A.

Site visit on Fri 27 Sept.
We will meet at 10.00 at Smithfield Market in London, see map. Central covered area.
Closest tube is Farrindgon station or Barbican (Hammersmith & City Line / Metropolitan / Circle Line) alternatively St. Paul's if you take the Central line.

Please bring your sketchbook (at least A5 / A4 in size), a really good pen or pencil (2B or softer) (no crappy bic pens please, grrrrrr), a tape-measure and camera and any other instrument you might find useful.

We will spend the entire day outside walking, looking and sketching the city - so appropriate clothing for that. We aim to finish by 17.00 with an opportunity to socialise after (optional).

In preparation for tomorrow, please take the time to print and read this short text "The Street Scene" by Berthold Brecht about methodology on epic theatre. Take this with you and mark up the key aspects.

Unit A 2013-14 | City fictions: narrative, infrastructure, choreography

The understanding of city as conglomerate of transitional processes will be the starting point for investigations into public realm conditions surrounding Smithfield Market in London. We will collate samples of the Everyday, the specific and the routine and attempt to ‘read’ the city by means of making multi-dimensional drawings. In parallel we will experiment at material scale by re-casting city fragments through model-making techniques. We are interested in processes of transformation from object to micro landscape.

The historical centre of Palermo will then become study area for the year and will provide project sites for carefully designed and choreographed architectural interventions. As a unit we continue to work with an open brief providing support for a student-driven agenda. The building-briefs will evolve as a response to historic and cultural contexts, promote common territories, extend beyond boundaries and explore unconventional urban relationships; in short: A reflection on a public building acting as ‘social node’ and providing local services to the community. We will work across all scales; social - material - architectural. Through critical observation of layers of relational qualities we will set out to rediscover spatial opportunity, research emerging forms of spatial practice and design alongside mechanisms of interaction. We will reference work by critical thinkers including Bertolt Brecht, Cedric Price and Walter Benjamin and Carlo Scarpa and contextualise those ideas into current situations. We will engage in conversations about methodology of epic theatre as means of observation and decision-making; about re-programming techniques, participation and adaptability; about techniques of spatial narrative and threshold; and space as junction.

Mon 24 June - Interventions in Cities (LFA) Panel discussion with Prof Tony Fretton, Prof Maria Segantini and Liza Fior

Tony Fretton and Liza Fir

Question and Answer Theme:
This house believes the needs of public space should lead urban interventions”.

Historically the architects design role springs from the clients Statement of Need/Brief. This may or may not engage with public space/contextual issues. The relation between building and context both interior and exterior is however at the very core of architecture. On the other hand, many very successful historic contexts have been created without the intervention of architects. Furthermore architectural intervention in the past has not always been successful. Are architects the best people to work with public space? Should the interventions of architects lead public space design or should the needs of public space lead architects, their clients and the design of buildings?

Thu 9 May 6.30 AVA - Highstreet London Lecture - CANCELLED

Tim Rettler studied with Peter Salter at UeL and works for the GLA / Mayors design office. He has closely been involved with Highstreet 2012, Aldgate East, Altab Ali park, Whitechapel Market etc

This lecture is an absolute MUST for all unit A students to provide you with a bigger understanding of processes related to Highstreet in the capital. The conditions we have been observing & working with in Whitechapel are exemplary to this. I trust this lecture will contain extremely useful information for you to contextualise and embed our unit A agenda (of "composite infrastructures") into the wider debate of urban regeneration and cultural change in London.

What we expect from your design work of this year is to argue a personal and critical point of view in relation to the current Highsteet debate.

You could use the lecture to "test" your ideas and participate to the discussion. What we want to see from you is an understanding and  critical reviewing / questioning of current policies that are being implemented / driven by the institutional bodies (Design for London, GLA, Tower Hamlets, etc.)  and your personal / alternative solutions and proposals / views on that as part of your design strategy.

On area this could be shown in your portfolio, is the "zoom-out drawing", we expect to see which takes on the wider scale of the city and speculates about future changes along the highsteet.

Elevations and sections

 Hey all!

I found some useful elevations + sections of neighboring buildings on Tower Hamlets planning website (Ibis hostel and the residential building behind the year 3 site) that can be useful for your section/elevation drawings. I uploaded them on drop box in the 03_site info folder.

Good luck!

Catherine du Toit Lecture - Thu 25 Apr 6pm AVA

This lecture is a must for all unit A students again. We strongly recommend you to go and see this, despite busy times. 51% Studios are an intersting practice working rather unconventionally and across a wide range of domains and scales, questioning the role and expectations of the profession.

Tim Ronalds Lecture Thu 18 Apr 18.00

Everybody should try to attend this. Very relevant to Unit A agenda this year. Public buildings, etc.

Tim Ronalds will try to describe in straightforward terms, using examples, how the team goes about the practice of architecture – their set up, and how they collaborate in the office, find work, develop designs, work with engineers and work with contractors to build their buildings. Tim Ronalds Architects mostly design arts, education and public buildings; for clients who are building for their own use. This is less common nowadays than it used to be. Tim will show the projects they completed last year – Ironmonger Row Baths and the University of Kent Music Building, and the schemes they are currently working on to explain how they work.

Tue 16 / Fri 19 April Final Crits

The final crit next week will be organised in two sessions. Half of Unit A (see names below) will present on Tuesday 16th - the other half on Friday 19th. Please assume the list as set - we have no scope for change due to overall student numbers and limited hours in the day! Sorry.

We expect to see your key elements of semester one (threshold observations / 1:1 material studies (physical stuff / models /etc bing it in!) and sem1 threshold in context) in selected form, and the entire semester two/three with site analysis, massing studies, sequences, your process work (including all working models), complete set of building proposal with all neccessary plans sections, details + visualisations of key scenarios / moments with occupation. Important that Whitechapel context is communicated in your drawings. Refer to full list of requirements as per earlier blog post / hand-out. Plans and sections must be printed at 1:100 and large enough for a wall presentation.

"The lecture, coinciding with the exhibition currently in the AA Gallery, will present projects that illustrate Dogma's main concerns. Since 2002 Dogma has focused almost exclusively on urban projects. If the modern city was shaped by streets and roads, the studio's project seeks a new form of urbanism made of walls. If one were to summarise life in a city and life in a building in one gesture, it would have to be that of passing through walls. Every moment of existence is a continuous movement through space defined by walls. "
