While the UN Sustainable Development Goals challenges cities to make urban living more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, the current and predominant model of reproduction of space in London is still based on privately financed regeneration projects which, almost always, result in the complete demolition of the existing urban fabric and the replacement of it with high value real estate.

In this process, environmental and social goals are used to justify the replacement of the existing buildings, communities, and activities, while the social and environmental costs of replacement, as well as its long terms effects, are given little consideration. But what would happen if the existing city, users, and activities were to be the starting point for regeneration?

This year Unit A will explore this question by engaging with local makers, users, and activities across the Blackhorse Lane area in Waltham Forest, elected in 2021 as one of the Mayor of London’s Creative Enterprise Zones (CEZ): “Creative Enterprise Zones are a Mayoral initiative to designate areas of London where artists and creative businesses can find permanent affordable space to work; are supported to start-up and grow; and where local people are helped to learn creative sector skills and access pathways to employment.” Mayor of London (2022).

At the same time that Blackhorse Lane area was designated a CEZ in recognition of the broad and rich community of makers and creatives that have been making innovative use of the existing light industrial buildings and spaces that historically occupy the Lea Valley, Waltham Forest council has launched a masterplan, that seeks to demolish and replace the entire area with the objective of bringing different uses in, such as residential, and intensifying the industrial use that already exists.

The questions arising from this situation and ‘tabula-rasa’ approach will become the focus of our investigation the academic year 2023-24. We will set out to better understand the relationships between the existing Blackhorse Collective creative industries and the wider Waltham Forest community, to think and propose alternative models of space production and architecture, that consider, repair and re-qualify the existing city, and by doing so, can make space for different uses and intensify the activities in more socially and environmentally sustainable ways.

In collaboration with local partners, we will sample and draw existing socio-spatial conditions and activities across the study area, to better understand their operations and re-imagine how they could be connected to each other in a Circular Economy system that is designed to retain and recover as much value as possible from the existing activities and site resources. This investigation will form the basis us to develop strategic architectural interventions which enable and enhance the system and explore the question of how do the parts connect and can work together?

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5821227326185409734.post-35400095650349084462023-10-09T12:02:00.000+01:002023-10-26T09:21:36.305+01:00Blackhorse Lane: Creative Enterprise Zone
This short film by local videographer Rua Acorn was commissioned by Waltham Forest to showcase the diversity of activities that can be found across the the Blackhorse Lane Creative Enterprise Zone (CEZ). If artists' communities are considered the roots of London's creative industries (worth £47 billion) what impact would their displacement have on London?

As a design studio, we engaged with this topic during the past academic year, and working in collarboartion with SPACE Studios, we set out to better understand and research what social value existing local artists working in Hackney generate across the community.

LINK to Observer Article

LINK to unit A design studio 'Artists in the City' 2022-23

LINK to SPACE Studios

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5821227326185409734.post-77365154139864985332023-06-28T23:37:00.012+01:002023-06-28T23:40:41.012+01:00Yearbook 2023

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The strategic design proposal encompasses three consecutive construction phases, each offering versatile spaces for performance and creative workshops and experimental engagement. As the project evolves in stages, it seamlessly integrates and upgrades the adjacent Deborah House that is home to over 60 local artists, operated by SPACE Studios. The ground floor spaces, featuring a long street-like theatre space, is designed to create multiple opportunities for connecting with the surrounding green spaces and public realm. The permeable design intentionally encourages wider formal and informal space activation with the aim to promote skill and cultural exchange across the neighbourhood, ultimately transforming it into a thriving and creative hub.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5821227326185409734.post-11171100103517815532023-06-10T11:41:00.000+01:002023-06-28T23:53:26.139+01:00Unit A student Samuel Littlewood nominated for RIBA Bronze Medal 2023 and wins UEL's Best Portfolio Award

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Contrary to the current urban policies that favour the ‘new’ over the ‘existing’, we engaged with the idea that artist communities are the roots of the creative industries in London, and we set out to re-imagine alternative models for spatial production that support their existence and permanence as an important part of the civic and productive fabric of inner-city neighbourhoods.

We collaborated with art studio-provider SPACE [Space Provision Artistic Cultural and Educational] and engaged with their artist community to explore how their diverse and creative practices impact the city beyond the studio space itself. We surveyed and analysed five SPACE studio buildings in Hackney and discovered formal and informal activities, exchanges, interactions, networks and relationships that characterise the practice of artists in the city. In response to this, students then devised strategies and designed Spaces for Knowledge and Skill Exchange that expand on the potential of existing creative and cultural practices through the construction of a spatial civic network.

The body of knowledge produced collectively through engagement in multi-disciplinary discourse including with students from Central Saint Martins Design Studio 2 working on the same topic, is currently further explored through a collaborative research project lead by the tutors and supported by SPACE Studios that also provide seven Unit A alumni with work experience as co-researchers.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5821227326185409734.post-54446601862169672402023-03-24T10:20:00.012+00:002023-06-16T12:24:58.358+01:00Unit A research on Social Value presented at CEZ Knowledge Exchange Forum

Together with Eline van der Vlist (SPACE Studios CEO), Fernanda and Carsten presented preliminary findings of the 'Artists in the City' collaborative research project at the Creative Enterprise Zone (CEZ) Knowledge Exchange Forum organised by the Greater London Authority (GLA) / Mayor of London on March 23 in Waltham Forest. Designing a new building really starts with looking at what already exists, before the first design responses are formulated. Context to be understood not only as a specific spatial surrounding, but expanding to the social, economic, cultural and ecological realms that form a complex multi-dimensional 'constellation' or relationships.
The ongoing transformation of our socio-spatial built environment is accelerated by the effects of climate change including the pandemic. Over the last years the considerable speed and impact of change onto urban neighbourhoods and our way of life has become evident. While Habrakens 'concept of field' explores the relationship between context and the architects' interaction within it, the realisation of the Anthropocene and its cause, now requires radical rethinking. What new tools are needed to better understand processes of the 'relational', the 'unknown' as well as unprecedented modes of transformation, such as step changes?

Over the last years, Fernanda Palmieri and Carsten Jungfer of unit A, have developed a set of new and innovative analytical tools that aim to expand the understanding of urban conditions under change, by critically questioning traditional methods used for architectural mapping.

The alternative tools have been developed through a research-lead design studio culture together with year 2 & 3 students of unit A at the BSc Architecture Programme at the University of East London. Using East London neighbourhoods as 'testing grounds', the tools explore dynamic urban contexts through methods of immersion: data is collected by groups of students working at street level, by first-hand observations, experiences and through dialogue with passers-by, residents, stakeholders etc. Contrary to traditional mapping techniques, that tend to focus on representational simplification of knowledge that already pre-exists, the alternative tools aim to discover genuine new and 'unknown' objectives, hidden layers, secret activities and new patterns of knowledge and without predetermined ideas of representation. Analytical 'moments' can be described as personal observations, 'findings', relevant 'individual encounters', that are recorded on site and respectively drawn using any suitable hybrid-drawing technique. This 'sampling' of numerous socio-spatial conditions are then re-contextualised through means of collective discourse, which allows a group to construct and verify a layered multi-dimensional representation of underlying patterns across various scales. This unconventional approach to mapping was acknowledged by London Borough of Hackneys' planning department in 2018, which consecutively commissioned Unit A to carry out a comprehensive socio-spatial mapping of Dalstons' town centre with a focus on its community stakeholders: Relational States of Dalston Research Project. The archaeological site was being excavated as part of the construction of HS2.

The UEL students visited the excavation, were briefed by the archaeology team and museum curator and worked to a detailed brief for the design and development of the models. During the design phase, the students produced numerous drawings and prototypes and attended design reviews with the archaeologists and the museum team. Because this was a live project which happened alongside the excavation itself, the challenge was to represent the spatial conditions and changes of the site and landscape in relation to space and time, translating this relational understanding into tactile and interactive models that, despite being physical, had to still remain open to interpretation and to possible changes in order to incorporate the new findings as they were uncovered.
The final models were designed in acrylic, using layers, colours and transparency to overlay the different phases and features of the site. The models were also designed to be played with, and to be arranged in multiple constellations. This multi- dimensional approach helped to communicate how the spaces of interest had changed over time, as well as enable the team of archaeologists to creatively explore the site and its surrounding landscape, supporting the process of interpretation and understanding of the site during the excavation, an unexpected but highly appreciated aspect of the students’ model.

The project for the St. Mary’s Field Museum’s models resulted from a collaboration with L - P : Archaeology, as part of their delivery of SEE (Skills, Employment and Education) and Public Engagement programmes for HS2. It provided a real
life project experience for the UEL students who had to respond and deliver the project using the tools offered by their architecture training, architectural language and critical design thinking, while learning: how to work in a construction environment; archaeological practice; historical phases and building typologies; and most importantly, learning how to engage in a collaborative process of trans- disciplinary knowledge exchange.

The models were presented to the team of 65 archaeologists and construction professionals by the students and exhibited to the public at the St. Mary’s Field Museum, a pop-up museum on site, between July and September 2021. During the exhibition, the representation models became key elements of the exhibit and proved to be highly popular with public audiences of all ages. It was seen by more than 1700 visitors. Some parts of the models featured in the BBC’s ‘Digging for Britain’ programme on BBC1 and BBC i-player (Series 9- Episode 2).

Awards:
• Archaeology Achievement Award 2021 (highly commended)

• Public & Community Engagement Award 2022 (winner in partnerships category)

Project Lead: Carsten Jungfer and Fernanda Palmieri (unit A degree unit)
Degree Student Participants: Aya Nasr, Busthana Nusren Odayapurath, Claudiu Theodor Cazan, Haleema Ahmed, Michael Ngam, Muhammad Tawfik
Special Thanks to UEL staff Paul Nichols, Rob Pyecroft, Daryl Brown, David Morgan and Mark Sowden.
Also, special thanks to Guy Hunt (L-P),Rachel Wood (Fusion-JV), Lily Hawker-Yates (L-P) and Susan Greaney (English Heritage) for making this collaboration project a reality.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5821227326185409734.post-81601293172743511672021-04-16T18:06:00.012+01:002021-04-20T08:16:29.950+01:00Young Clapton: Final Reviews 16 Apr
Final Reviews day 2: more very thoughtful and multi-layered work (by year 3 students Busthana Nusren Odayapurath and Michael Ngam) for a more youth-friendly Clapton Park. Within the pandemic scenario, travelling across the city to work and to carry out daily activities became unfeasible, while a life-style that embraces local activities and reduces travel distances became more desirable.
Transport for London and Local Authorities responded to this quickly by taking temporary measures that accelerate the adoption of innovative policies to rebuild healthier, fairer and more sustainable neighbourhoods including the introduction of low traffic zones, the improvement of infrastructure for cycling and walking, and improvements to the public realm with a more child & youth friendly approach.
Our cities changing and we are interested in how this shift can positively impact urban renewal at local scale. As a continuity to our research into civic spaces, this year we will investigate opportunities to improve the quality of life in London by focusing on spaces for the Youth across a range of scales, inclusive spaces for Playing, Meeting, Learning, Exchanging and Caring. The design proposals will be informed by the idea of neighbourhoods as a shared and collective place to live, work and play.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5821227326185409734.post-65570545927514384652020-07-01T11:57:00.005+01:002021-04-14T12:38:51.476+01:00RIBA ELAG Student Award 2020: Winner Mariam Touray, year 3 student from Unit A
Mariam Touray wins RIBA ELAG Student Award 2020 in Radical Sustainability category

Her award-wining design proposal ‘Homerton Hall’, is an adaptable multi-use building that aims to serve Homerton’s diverse population as a place for cultural exchange in the widest sense: Markets, performances and events, exhibitions, community space. He developed a multi-dimensional design strategy for the Gascoigne Estate, that critically rethinks the urban residential neighbourhood, in the context of current climate emergency. The proposal engages with a number of local stakeholders by working collaboratively to reduce environmental impacts, produce local food, generate renewable energy through waste, promoting a self-build process and environmental activism and by setting out a plan for a radical green vision through tree-planting.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5821227326185409734.post-12473510068268879742020-01-29T15:24:00.001+00:002020-01-29T15:26:03.446+00:00Thu 30 Jan Open Studios - Mid Year Exhibition
