Unit A

Unit A is a research-led BSc Architecture Design Studio at the University of East London, led by Carsten Jungfer and Fernanda Palmieri since 2015. We work with live-project situations and connect design learning with research through knowledge exchange between students and external partner organisations. Unit A focuses on social-spatial conditions within contested urban contexts and understands architectural design both as a spatial and strategic response to specific socio-spatial contexts.

more UEL News: Unit A exhibits at London Design Fair

from UEL news: The University of East London has been exhibiting at the London Design Fair at the Old Truman Brewery in Brick Lane, London.
The displayed work was devised by the University’s Department of Architecture and Visual Arts, with seven architecture students helping with the project as paid collaborators. In partnership with London Borough of Hackney the project, entitled Relational States of Dalston, was selected to form part of a collective showcase of over 60 design-led research projects across the UK.
The exhibition was part of the Design Research for Change stand at the London Design Fair that has been described as ‘transcending disciplinary, methodological and conceptual boundaries’.
This research project was initiated by architecture lecturers Carsten Jungfer and Fernanda Palmieri and is a result of connecting studio teaching methodology with a live project, combining architectural and urban design practice.
Mr Jungfer explained that last year architecture students were studying Dalston and its immediate area and the London Borough of Hackney became interested after seeing their work at the University’s end of year exhibition.
“This kick-started a collaborative partnership between our University and the council’s planning department,” Mr Jungfer said. “As a result, under the supervision of the lecturers, seven of our architecture students have contributed as paid co-researchers to the ongoing project to date, allowing them to gain valuable experience as young professionals in their field.”
The project’s large spatial drawing has been updated and exhibited in a number of places including the Print House Gallery in Dalston last year and further exhibitions are planned with Hackney Council to showcase the latest version of the drawing.
“Hackney Council have indicated that this collaboration between the University of East London and the council was as a unique approach and potential model for future partnerships, fostering unconventional knowledge transfer, which is critically needed in the light of public debates relating to the social impact of urban development and gentrification,” Mr Jungfer added.
The architecture students who were co-researchers on the project were:  Angelle Dimech, Dalcimaira Nunes Cardoso, Julia Skiba, Kiesse Andre, Marianne Gallagher, Nelton Bordonhos Barbosa and Nisha Anwar.
