Unit A

Unit A is a research-led BSc Architecture Design Studio at the University of East London, led by Carsten Jungfer and Fernanda Palmieri since 2015. We work with live-project situations and connect design learning with research through knowledge exchange between students and external partner organisations. Unit A focuses on social-spatial conditions within contested urban contexts and understands architectural design both as a spatial and strategic response to specific socio-spatial contexts.

RIBA EAST Sustainability Prize awarded to Xander Tholl Inciong (year 3)

A panel of judges from the RIBA East London Architecture Group awarded Xander from unit A, the prestigious prize for best sustainable project, after anonymously reviewing a wide selection of portfolios from across all levels of the school (degree & masters).
Xanders project titled ’Dalston Eco-Hub’ thoroughly analysed the environmental and urban context and builds on the understanding of Ridley Road Market as metabolising organism. The building acts as infrastructure to the market and floats above its service area, comprising a good waste recycling facility, an international food-market, a cooking school, areas for food production and a bio-digester generating sustainable energy from food waste.

It's the third time for a unit A student to win the RIBA EAST Sustainability Prize in the last 4 years.
